About Our School

Children’s Village School is a unique setting within the Calgary Board of Education. The programming offered is designed to meet the complex learning, social, and emotional needs of elementary school-aged children whose severe emotional and behavioral difficulties in their current school, community and home create significant barriers to their ability to engage in learning. The educational program content includes a strong focus on literacy, numeracy, self-regulation, and social skills. Students have access to weekly art, music, and technology lessons, as well as daily physical education, Class sizes range from 6-8 students, depending on the grade level and complexity of learner profiles. The CBE contracts Woods’s Homes to provide therapeutic programming and support for students at Children’s Village School. Each classroom is staffed with a certified CBE teacher who is supported by two school support counselors from Wood’s Homes. In addition to this enhanced classroom support, additional services available include on-site clinical support for students, family support, and psychiatric consultations. Some students may also be eligible for speech therapy, physio-therapy and occupational therapy services.

Children’s Village School offers wrap-around supports and services for children who are exhibiting extreme emotional/behavioral difficulties, which currently impede their ability to be successful in their school, community and home. The goal of this educational and therapeutic program is to build upon the existing abilities of the students and their families, promoting continued development of strengths, skills and attributes that will allow for long-term positive change across all environments. The programming available at Children’s Village School is most effective when both the students and their parents/guardians participate in the therapeutic and family supports offered.

Students are assigned to a homeroom class, but often work with other teachers and peers as they re-group for Guided Reading and Math. This provides an opportunity for students to build relationships with different staff and creates a greater sense of community within the school.

Our Philosophy

Every child deserves to feel and be safe. Children’s Village School is dedicated and focused on making our school a safe and caring, trauma sensitive environment that meets the needs of every student that attends. We do this through building strong, healthy, caring and supportive relationships. Through the pillars of MANDT and ARC staff train and continuously educate themselves on how to best meet the needs of the complex students that attend Children’s Village School.

“The more healthy relationships a child has, the more likely he will be to recover from trauma and thrive. Relationships are the agents of change and the most powerful therapy is human love.”
