The Caravel 1400

I chose to draw the caravel because I wanted to learn about the caravel. My boat is a sailboat. I learned that two of Christopher Columbus ships are caravels too. Caravels are very fast. They can carry about 130 tons of cargo. The caravel is about 65 feet long. I also learned that caravel were smaller and lighter than their later Spanish galleons.

I chose to draw the Mary Rose because it had a rainbow on the side of the ship. The Mary Rose is named after King Henry VIII, his oldest daughter. It was built between 1509-1511. It had cannons that shot form the sides of the ship. Is the only ship from that era on display anywhere in the world sank in 1545.

Mayflower 1620

I chose to draw the Mayflower because I like the name. I learned that the Mayflower set sail on April 5 1621. My boat is 90 feet long and 24 feet wide. The Mayflower took Pilgrims from England to New England in 1920. On September 16, Captain Christopher Jones set sail alone and found Cape Cod on November 19. There is a double of the boat given to the US 1957.

Queen Anne's Revenge 1717

Blackbeard the pirate stole a ship near the Bahamas in 1717. He renamed the Dutch Flute "The Queen Anne's Revenge." Blackbeard added 14 more cannons called "Blunderbusses" to the ship for a total of 40 cannons. Historians believe that they found "The Queen Anne's Revenge" off the North Carolina coast. Excavation has recently begun. One historian believes that Blackbeard ran the ship aground on purpose and took any treasure for himself, cheating his crew. Blackbeard was murdered before he could reach England to receive his pardon.

HMS Victory 1758

I chose to draw HMS Victory because of all the sails. The HMS Victory is the oldest warship. Thomas Slade designed this ship, which started being built in 1758 and was finished on May 7,1765. The HMS Victory carried 100 guns. They used 2,000 oak trees, which meant that they cut 60 acres of forest. Admiral Lord Nelson was the caption of the HMS Victory. The HMS Victory had excellent sailing quality. In 1922 the HMS Victory was placed on the docks in Portsmouth. It is now a museum and is visited by 350,000 people each year.

HMS Endeavor 1768

I chose to draw the Endeavor because it is an English exploring ship and I like exploring ships. The Endeavor’s maiden voyage was in 1768 by Captain James Cook. He was an 18th century British explorer, navigator & astronomer who sailed the South Pacific. He discovered New Zealand, eastern coast of Australia & navigated the Great Barrier Reef with astronomers & artists onboard. Endeavor had a round bluff bow and a flat bottom that provided uncommon spaciousness and helped prevent her from being torn apart by coral. In 1793 she ran aground off Rhode Island and sank.

Pandora 1779

I chose to draw the Pandora because I liked the sails. It was built 1779 and the captain was Edward Edwards. It traveled from England to the Pacific. The name of the Pandora came from the story of the Pandora’s Box. Pandora carried criminals. The Pandora sank by hitting the coral rocks.
I enjoyed learning about the Pandora.
