Horseshoe debate

Before we could debate, we needed to learn how to debate. Mrs. Saar, from the Galileo Educational Network, came in to help us with this skill. We learned that:

  1. Participants' desks are arranged in a horseshoe with the moderator seated at the open end.
  2. Opening Statements - Each participant presents his/her opening speech/comments within a 1-2 minute time limit.
  3. Open Debate - Participants have the opportunity to question the positions of others by asking questions, refuting points or arguments or by adding additional support or detail to a position.
  4. The moderator keeps order and scores the debaters on their speeches, questions and points they make.
