Our task in robotics was to create a robot that would save women and young girls from walking many miles from an African village everyday to fetch water. This would allow the young girls to go to school and get an education. When the tank's water level dropped, the robot was to go to the river, fill up and then return with the water.
The Grade 4 A and B classes decided to create robots that could perform jobs that would allow children to be released from dangerous working conditions. We decided to design robotic prototypes that would break large boulders into gravel and carry the gravel back to a factory. The robots would be donated to charitable organizations that could perhaps ‘barter’ the robot for the release of children.
