Principal Message: January 2014

Michelle Speight, Principal Glendale School“Always walk through life as if you have something new to learn and you will.” ~Vernon Howard

I would like to take a moment to briefly introduce myself to each of you.  My name is Michelle Speight and I have the sincere pleasure of being the new Principal of Glendale School; commencing January 6, 2014.

I have been a proud teacher with the Calgary Board of Education for sixteen years.  Over this time I have taught kindergarten through grade nine and have also had roles as an Educational Technology Specialist, Assistant Principal and Principal.  For the last three years, I was the Principal of two amazing schools simultaneously; Colonel Walker and Ramsay School.

For me, coming to Glendale is a bit like “coming home.” For over ten years, I lived a couple of blocks away from Glendale School and both of my now grown children also attended Glendale for some of their elementary schooling before we moved a short distance away into the community of Altadore. I know firsthand that Glendale has a rich history that I feel proud to have been a part of as a parent and now of course, as a Principal.  It’s amazing what roads life’s travels will take you down!
Students, parents and teachers often wonder what their new Principal is “all about” when they first come to a school.  The short answer is I believe in children and the importance of teachers, parents and community working together for their academic success.

The long answer is that I believe strongly that all children come to school with potential, curiosity, and interest in engaging in social interaction, establishing relationships, constructing their learning and negotiating with everything the environment brings to them.  I believe that teachers must be deeply aware of each child’s potential and construct all their work and the environment of the children’s experience to respond appropriately.  At the centre of our work together is the principle that each child is naturally curious, wondrous about learning, filled with potential, possesses many talents, skills and abilities and sees joy in all things possible.

Together with Alberta Education and the Calgary Board of Education, I believe therefore, that education must be personalized for each child; not considered in isolation but rather, together with the family, other children, the teachers, the environment of the school, the community and the wider society.  In my view, I think of a school as a “system” in which all these relationships, which are all interconnected and reciprocal, are activated and supported through intentional instructional design.  Children have a right to high-quality education that supports the development of their true potentials and it is our collective responsibility to foster this for our children through a shared vision for learning. The work of Alberta Education’s “Inspiring Education, the Calgary Board of Education’s Three Year Education plan and the Glendale School Development plan each guide and strongly align to these beliefs.

I am truly thrilled to be a part of the Glendale School community. My best wishes to you and your family during this festive season.  I sincerely look forward to having the opportunity to connect with each of you in the New Year and to discuss our shared vision for your child’s learning together.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have in the meantime.

Most sincerely,

Michelle Speight
Principal, Glendale School
