Water and robots are not always a good combination. The students brainstormed
ways robots could work in water, particularly in the Bow River. Some of the
ideas were:
-
checking dams for leaks
-
checking for leaks in the water pipes in the water treatment plant
-
checking the temperature of the Bow glacier and measuring how fast it is
melting
-
looking for garbage / pollution / bodies in the Bow
River
-
starting an irrigation system
After discussing the tasks further, and looking at the materials we had available,
students were able to decide as a group which task their robot was going to
do. There
were
certain
requirements
when
building
their robot.
For
example
each
robot
needed to go forwards, have a sensor (either light or touch sensor)
and turn.
Introduction
Our robotics started with a review. We looked at building gear
trains, box beams, and the icons on the robotics program. The time was spent
trying new combinations, touching the pieces and sharing what was discovered.
Comments from parents
- I find it amazing what grade 3 / 4 is able to learn!! Wow. Kudos
to the teachers / to Glendale. (Ali’s mom)
- Brienna clearly demonstrated increased knowledge and so ability to apply
that knowledge when creating her robot. She continues to be very enthusiastic
about
her participation in this area. (Brienna’s mom)
- I saw my sister doing robotics. Her group did a good job, and she knows
a lot of robotic words. She did a good job of talking. (Paria’s brother)
- I was very surprised and impressed with the quality of the robots and the
kid’s presentations. Not your typical grade 3 projects! Alex looked forward
to the robotics classes and didn’t want to miss a single day. It’s
nice when the kids are excited about learning. (Alex’s mom)
- I was not able to make it on Friday but Kyle has kept me well informed
about all of it. Kyle told me he found the castor (3 wheeler) robot the best.
He
would like to see that robot on the web site. (Kyle’s mom)
- T.J. was really excited about robotics this year. He seemed to be more
interested in sharing his programming knowledge with us than showing his
robot off. (TJ’s
dad)
- I was particularly interested in the programming aspect of the program – the
use of logic and icons, but I didn’t really understand this part until
I questioned Ross afterwards. An introduction explaining this aspect and how
the control box works would be good. I also think the teamwork learning were
very valuable. (Ross’s dad)
- Robotics section was interesting and informative. Chanelle was extremely
excited to do this section. I think the children doing their won thing on
each robot – whether
it had to do with divers ability or what the robot did show creative minds
at work! (Chanelle’s mom)
- Our children (students) have an excellent opportunity with our
robotics project. It is an incredible learning experience – creative,
technical, social. (Brandon D’s mom)
Celebration
This was an afternoon where all the students celebrated
their accomplishments. The work they had done was difficult and frustrating.
Some groups were disappointed that their robot didn't actually do what they
wanted it to do, but we were very proud of all they had done. Parents and friends
were invited into the classroom and were also very impressed.
