Grade 3
Rock Art
During the Rocks and Minerals unit in Science, our students created the 3 types of rock using many different materials.
Sedimentary rock was represented by weaving in layers with colourful yarn. Shells and pebbles were added to create texture and interest.
Metamorphic rocks used to be either sedimentary or igneous before heat and pressure caused them to change. A flat piece of window screen was first decorated using beads, sequins, buttons and coloured floss. It was then transformed into a 3-dimensional shape.
Students then mimicked the cooling of magma from a volcano, which results in the formation of igneous rock. Brightly coloured crayon shavings were melted onto fabric, and glitter was added to represent crystals.
