Principal's Message | September

I hope you all had the opportunity to connect with family and friends and get back to the 3 R’s for the summer – rest, relax and recharge! Having been the Principal at Brentwood School for the past year, I experienced the great community that Brentwood School is and as a result am very excited and invigorated about the possibilities this year will bring again.

We have lots to talk about and lots to share so let’s get right to it!

School Messenger
As we are officially an eco-conscious school, with a successful environment saving program in place to save on paper, we will now be sending all school-wide communications home via School Messenger only. If you have not yet signed up for School Messenger, you may do so by going to the CBE main website page and clicking on the link ‘Subscribe.’ School Security The safety of all staff, students, and parents is of outmost importance to us. As the doors will be locked shortly after the entry bell, anyone who is late needs to come to the front main entry door and buzz the office. All parents are required to enter the building through the front doors and check in at the office – not through student entry doors. By coming to the front doors, our security cameras allow us to properly identify people prior to coming into the school. We thank you in advance for your adherence to this policy.

Thank you and well wishes to those moving on!
As always, life brings changes for people. We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to staff who have moved on to other things. We express our sincere gratitude for their service to the Brentwood School community and wish them well in their future endeavours….Krista Sutherland, Bob Straiton, Melissa McNeil, Monica Eldred, Rosemary Coppold, Katrina Schofield, Gayle Peck, Erica Fancey and Maria Santarin September Activities and other upcoming events ALL EXISTING and NEW volunteers must attend a Brentwood Volunteer Orientation in September! This condition must be met before you can volunteer at Brentwood in the future. The following dates and times are:
September 14 - 11:00 – 11:45 AM or 2:50 – 3:35 PM
September 28 – 6:00 – 6:45 PM

Our hard working Parent Council and Association members are planning for another superb Welcome Back Breakfast event on September 15th. It will be a great opportunity for all to reconnect after the summer as well as enjoy some scrumptious goodies to start the year. If you have the desire and inclination to assist with this event, please do not hesitate to offer your volunteering services.

Our first of two ‘Parent/Teacher conferences’ will be held on September 21 and 22. This will be a change from last year where many parents came at one time to meet the teacher as a group. This year parents are invited and encouraged to book an appointment via conference manager with their child’s teacher to discuss and share information about your child one-on-one in a 15 minute interview. The purpose will be for you to share as much detail as you can about your child such that the teacher can make concise decisions about programming needs for academic success.

We will be hosting our annual Terry Fox Run on September 28. Students will be encouraged to bring a donation and run for this worthy cause. We invite any parents who would like to join in the run on that day as well. Times for the run will be sent out in the near future by our PE Specialist.

Fire Drills and Lockdown Practices
All schools have 6 fire drills and 2 lockdown practices during the school year. These drills are done to ensure that everyone in the building knows what to do in case of an emergency. When the fire bell rings, all classes move silently to the nearest exit to assemble on the field. We have our first fire drill before September 30. Please take this opportunity to discuss fire safety with your child. Our first lockdown practice will occur in the very near future as well. We practice this drill to stay safe if an intruder were to be in the building. In a lockdown, students gather in an area of their classroom with their teacher and remain quiet until informed the lockdown is over. Students are informed in advance of the first lockdown and fire drill so that they know what to expect. Subsequent drills will be unannounced. If parents have any questions about these safety drills please contact school administration.

School Council
Our first school council meeting will be held on September 19 at 7:00 PM. All parents are invited to attend and learn about the activities of our school council.

Residencies this year
We have several exciting residencies and extra-curricular activities planned for students this year. The following classes will be participating in these events:
Grade 1-4 Swimming
Grade 1-3 Alien Inline Skating
Grade 4-5 Lacrosse
Grade 5 – Canoeing
Whole School – Sound Kreations Dance – Grades 2, 3 and 4 in November / Kindergarten,
Grade 1 and Grade 5 in March. Performance times for parents to attend will be issued closer to the residency dates.

I look forward to seeing all of you on Tuesday, September 5 – the first day of School!
