What are We Discovering about Empathy?

In our TLC, our essential cross school question is, “What are we discovering about character?” At the beginning of the year, we focused on the pillars of our program: “Respect for Self, Others, and the Environment”.

Our second focus is, “What are we discovering about empathy?” Empathy is easy to say but hard to do. Empathy is trying to understand what another person is feeling. It is seeing the world through another’s eyes. It helps people to get along better and to feel better. Having empathy is a key ingredient to becoming the best person you can be. You, as parents, have chosen this alternative program in which you make a commitment to work closely with staff. We look to you to have conversations about how you as a family exhibit empathy. Here are some conversation starters and ways to practice:

  • listening to someone rather than trying to talk to them
  • asking someone how they are feeling if you think there is something wrong
  • learning about people from different backgrounds and cultures
  • showing concern and care for others
  • paying attention to the needs of others
  • getting to know someone better instead of judging them

Empathy is easy to say, but hard to do. Empathy is trying to understand what another person is feeling. It is seeing the world through another’s eyes. It helps people to get along better and to feel better.

We will introduce “What are we discovering about Empathy?” at our Character Learning Celebration on Friday, October 13 at 12:00 led by students in 3C and 3K.
