Principal's Message | September
Welcome back Queen Elizabeth Families.
I had a great summer visiting family and friends in Victoria and Vancouver and enjoyed a
few camping trips and hikes in BC and Alberta. It was nice to step away from the busy role
of being a Principal and now it is wonderful to be back ready to start another year at QES.
One of the great joys in working as a Principal is having the opportunity to work with
dedicated staff members in planning and implementing effective educational practices and
experiences for all students. The school staff members are working together and there is a
very strong sense of team work and collaboration. All teachers are connected to
professional learning communities within the school and many are connected to learning
co-horts created by the Calgary Board of Education and other educational institutions. The
level of active professional learning is extensive and on- going and I am very proud to help
lead these professionals in their work as they strive to be the best educators possible.
The year is off to a great start and active learning is well underway. We look forward to
having two grades 3/4 classrooms begin the year sharing their Design Challenges in the
Learning Commons. Ms. Ney and Mr. Wensley have offered to begin the year continuing
the excellent work started last year during the Steam Hour Thursday sessions with Deb
Hamilton. Please access the classroom blog sites later in the month to gain greater
understanding of the learning processes in action.
We are taking an opportunity in September and October to explore the genre of humour.
Humour can be used as a tool to help build resiliency. It is our goal to help students find
enjoyment in humorous types of reading, writing, artistic creations, music and
performances. This will be explored at a child appropriate level. Here is one list of children’s
novels that contain humour. https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/childrens-humor
Thank you to Tim Horton’s for donating coffee and cups and to School Council members for
organizing the snacks and coffee for parents on the first day. Thank you to the Washbrook
family for providing the welcome back sign and balloons. We hope to see all families at
some of the early fall events including Meet the Teacher on Thursday Sept. 14 and the
Terry Fox Run Event and Ice Cream Social on Sept. 29 at 2:15 pm.
Once again I want to welcome you to the 2017/18 school year. For many of us this is our
fourth year together. For those who are new to QES please know that my door is open.
