School Council

School Council News | December

The November meeting of the School Council included a review by Mr. Watson of a draft of last year’s Annual Results Report.  Summarized were the School Development Plan (SDP), Accountability Pillar Survey and Grade 6 Provincial Achievement Test (PAT) scores. It was great to see that Marion Carson performed very well in all areas of the PATs.  Next, staff and students will work toward improving the number of students achieving excellence.  Learning targets for the SDP were met or exceeded in Writing, Self-regulation strategies (one of the tougher categories), and Math.

Marion Carson is getting a new traverse climbing wall in the gym, replacing the old "Canadian Climber" that is currently installed. It will stand 8' high and come with foam mats. Teachers will receive yearly training to ensure that the wall is used safely. The Parent Association is applying to use some of our casino funds to pay for the wall.

This holiday season is one where we help those in our community who are less fortunate. The Parent Association will once again be sponsoring Christmas hampers for up to five families identified as being in need.

Open positions on the School Council; we are still looking to fill several roles including our representatives with the Council of School Councils (COSC), Calgary and Area Parent and School Councils (CAPSC), and the Alberta School Council Association (ASCA). We are looking for individuals to fill any or all of these roles. If you are interested in the roles or more information, please send a note to

Lastly, there are several classes in need of additional parent volunteers. If you are interested, please fill out a volunteer form obtainable from the school's office.  By signing the form, parents will agree the responsibilities/conditions that come with volunteering in a school.  In the form you choose how you'd like to volunteer; volunteer as little or as much as you like!  It is not a commitment, just an expression of interest and permission to be contacted about opportunities within that area.
