Principal's Message - March/April

Watching the signs of spring out the window I am reminded of how quickly time flies in the school year.  The Olympic Games were exciting with numerous stories of interest to our students.  We are excited about the Piitoayis Olympic events our students have planned for March 4th.

We are finishing the second reporting period and you will be receiving report cards summarizing your child’s progress in numerous areas.  The report cards go home on March 22nd and we hope to see you at Parent-Teacher interviews on March 25 or 26th.

Phase II of the Powwow Regalia project has finished and we have more students who were initiated into the Powwow.  The last phase starts March 8th for our kindergarten, grade 2 and grade 4 students.  Forms were sent home the last week of February and due back by February 28th.  If you missed getting the forms back contact the school and we’ll see if we can accommodate your child.

The grade six students have been writing the script for an operetta which we will perform on June 21st, national Aboriginal Day.  Keep this date free on your calendar so you can enjoy the excitement of the performance.  Details will come in the next newsletter.

Finally, I hope to see parents and guardians at the Parent Council meeting on March 16th from 5:00 until 8:00 in the staffroom.  Dinner is provided followed by the meeting.  Lori Pritchard, the System Assistant Principal, Aboriginal Education and Nancy Lukey, System Principal Diversity, attended an FNMI Collaborative Frameworks workshop in Edmonton, which focused on promising practices around the Alberta. Lori and Nancy are very interested in sharing these promising practices with the parent council at Piitoayis Family School.  They will open the meeting with their presentation, followed by a school update and a sharing circle.

Working together we can support the children at Piitoayis Family School.

Miss Jean (Sootaki)
