Braeside School Naturalization Project

We did it! Under the direction of our two co-chairpersons, Darla Meijer and Joanne Haugjord, Our Braeside School Naturalization Project has had a major transformation since we ended school last June. Throughout this past summer, the grounds were dug up, excavated and prepared for our tree planting this fall. Boulders were purchased, logs laid along the beds and asphalt levelled. On Saturday, September 17th, many volunteer parents and staff came out to plant our native trees appropriate for a prairie foothills landscape; White Spruce, Larch, Aspen. Our picnic tables were assembled to create an outdoor learning environment for our students. On Monday and Tuesday of that week, we had all our students and staff, with the help of many wonderful volunteers planting our shrubs and small plants. Currently we can see Dogwood, Lilacs, Rose Bushes and ornamental grasses throughout the gardens. Tree Canada was a sponsor for our project and together with Fed Ex Express representatives joined our school in celebration of our major event on Tuesday. Our students will benefit from the new green space and will learn the importance of preserving the environment and how they can contribute to a better quality of life for both current and future generations. A special thank you goes out to our Braeside School Council for funding this enormous project and for the endless hours that many volunteers have put it to make this a huge success. Be sure to look at our powerpoint!

What an exciting time for our school and our community! Our committee approved a final drawing and design that our Project Manager – Ms. Karen Tewnion presented to us. Karen has put together a power point that begins to outline and describe the project. We will be placing this power point very soon on our website, so please take some time to look at it. We will also have the design, knowing that there might still be a few changes, framed and in the front entrance of the school for all to see and admire. If you have any questions or comments, please talk to our co-chairman Joanne Haugjord or Darla Meijer.
