Weekly Update | Nov. 22, 2017

Dear Eugene Coste Families,

Thank you to everyone over the last week and half who helped our community through a difficult time; it was very telling of how caring our school community is with the ongoing offers of support and kindness to the Roelofsens.

With only a month before Christmas break, we have a lot of work to do in a few short weeks. Our teachers have continued to design quality learning tasks to understand your child’s knowledge and application of skills in multiple settings, such as the open ended math task you may have seen during last week’s conferences. Students from Kindergarten to Grade 4 were given an opportunity to engage in an open-ended problem asking them to reason with numbers with increasing difficulty, and share their thinking on how to arrive at MULTIPLE answers and solutions. This, for many students, was a new experience. Through examining the results of initial attempts, teachers were able to determine where students required support and designed activities to provide them practice with similar processes, with a variety of numbers to build confidence and flexibility at determining more than one outcome to problems. Please ask your child how they feel they did on this task.

Report cards will be sent home on the last day of school before break. We endeavour for parents to have a good understanding of how their child is doing, prior to the arrival of the report card. If you were not able to attend conferences, please call or email your teacher to set up a time to meet; we want to partner with families to ensure we are supporting students in all areas of their learning.

Finally, starting Wednesday, November 29th, Bus A will be paired with another school which should alleviate the issues we have had with late bus arrival and departure. There will not be any changes to our route or times. Fingers crossed!
