Welcome to Eugene Coste School

Weekly Update | Nov. 8, 2017

Dear Eugene Coste Families,

Winter is officially here and November will be a busy month for families and teachers alike!  We started planning our storytelling residency with artist, Jeff Stockton, this week. He will be joining us for 6 sessions through November and December in preparation for our Academic Sharing Evening on February 1st. Teachers are seeking out familiar stories which connect to their content areas for students to use in their artist in residence work.

As many parents have read in the news and in the most recent civic election, math is a burning topic. As a staff, we are participating in CBE’s Math Cohort; three teachers, Sra. Salamanca, Srta. Monica and Sr. Reyes are attending sessions to better understand how to program and develop student understanding in mathematics. As part of our work with the cohort, each classroom will be participating in a consistent open-ended math task this week. Teachers will provide students with an exploratory learning opportunity where students will utilize their previous understanding and strategies to attempt to solve the problem as individuals and as a group. Our goal is for students to look deeply at the problem to determine what it is asking and to express their thinking and utilize a range of strategies in coming up with multiple solutions to the problem. This method allows teachers to see where students are at with regards to their developing skills, and will plan accordingly to address students through targeted instruction. Through consolidating learning as a group, students will also learn from one another in how individuals solved the problem, further supporting their language development in expressing their understanding of math content.

Welcome to Sra. Marina Millan-Bugg, our practicum student joining us from the Werklund Department of Education at the University of Calgary. Her native language is Spanish; however she also speaks English and French. Sra. Marina has two school-aged children and is familiar with our popular Spanish bilingual program. She is excited to be welcomed into Sra. Jackie’s grade 3 class and will be with us until December, and will return in February through the end of April.
