Principal's Message
Welcome to Queensland Downs School. My name is Jean Hugill and I very happy to be appointed the principal of this energetic learning community.

I have over 25 years of experience with the Calgary Board of Education, as a teacher, a curriculum leader, an assistant principal and an acting principal. As a native Calgarian, I have been most fortunate to work all around the city; from Woodlands School in the deep SW, to inner city schools in Victoria Park and Connaught. Most recently I was the assistant principal at O. S. Geiger, a large culturally diverse school in the NE part of Calgary. I have enjoyed my experiences at every one of these fine CBE schools. Each one has its own distinctive culture, focus and energy and I have enjoyed learning and growing along with each school community.

As a teacher, and now as an administrator, I have always believed that learning is about taking risks, being inquisitive, making mistakes, an adventure.  I believe that to effectively learn anything, a student needs to trust and deem that he or she is okay right where they are and that they know their own strengths and weaknesses. As educators we must strive to create classrooms that are a “safe” place to be, to think, to feel, to inquire. If we can lead our students to believe in themselves, then I am convinced that students will learn.

Education and its process need to be genuinely meaningful to our 21st century learners. Students need to be challenged with problems and ideas that they find first of all interesting and secondly intellectually demanding. For learning to have impact, students need to be engaged. Our Queensland Downs focus on inquiry based learning is an excellent way of engaging and energizing our students.

Team work, engagement, relevancy and rigor are the guiding principles which will help our students to believe in themselves as learners. Guiding our Queensland students to value and enjoy learning will move them from dependence to interdependence, from other reliant to self reliant, and from irresponsibility to responsibility in all areas of their lives.

It promises to be an exciting year at Queensland Downs School and I look forward to working with you all. “Striving for Excellence in a Changing World” What a fitting motto for today’s learners!

Sincerely,

Jean Hugill, Principal
Queensland Downs School
