Welcome Back to School!
2009 - 2010
Nutrition Month in May
Our new healthy lunch leadership team has chosen a name. ‘The Power Lunch Crew’ was busy making announcements, posters and personal appearances to encourage students to ‘Pack a Power Lunch’. For the month of May, Wednesdays were Veggie Wednesdays and Fridays were Fruit Fridays. Students grouped into 6 colour teams. Each week the team with the most veggies and fruit eaten, as tracked by our Power Lunch Crew, were invited to the gym to play fun games.
More than 1 285 servings of fruit and vegetables were eaten at DDS this month. Keep eating your greens!

Hazel Hutchins @ Douglasdale
Full of stories, writing tips, story ideas and even juggling - Hazel's visit
enriched our understanding of the process of writing and the life
of a writer. Thanks, Hazel!

Winter Celebration-Teddy Bear's Christmas
This wonderful celebration of children's voices
was performed on Dec. 10 & 11th.

G-Cell Project
G-Cell is a project inspired by 4K students attending Zoo School this past fall. We are collecting cell phones to help the Calgary Zoo raise money for Gorilla Conservation (Mountain Gorillas in Congo).
By recycling cell phones we can prevent them from going into our landfills. By sending our cell phones to the Zoo the coltan in each phone can be recovered and reused in another electronic device. This means that more coltan does not need to be mined. The mining in Congo destroys gorilla habitat.
Less mining = less destruction of gorilla habitat!

Thank you to all the people who have dropped cell phones in the G-Cell box. Save all your old cell phones. Tell your friends and family about the G-Cell project and how we can save gorillas and their habi†at.
Remembrance Day Assembly:
The Grade Three students hosted a moving and memorable Remembrance Day Assembly on Friday November 7. This movie includes the personal stories of war experiences of the students' family members and the Song of Peace performed by all grade three students. It is lengthy and so your connection speed may cause a delay in download time.
World Peace Day
On October 9th, the milky white peace dove was flown by the grade four students at our Peace Assembly and then outside in the golden, afternoon sun against the brilliant, blue sky. Everyone in the school wrote a message on the dove about what they did for peace on September 21, World Peace Day. The great peace banner was also carried with the hand painted, cerulean blue letters and Earth, the beautiful, blue ball of life resting on olive leaves, symbolizing
‘Peace One Day’!
