JSM & G.W Skene School Council

A reminder that School Council is every 3rd Thursday at 3:45 pm. We alternate between G. W. Skene School and James Short Memorial School.

Hello Parents of James Short Memorial and G.W Skene.

My name is Charlotte Mitchell, I am a Mother of 2. I have a child at each school. I feel a strong desire to be involved in my children’s schools. I am asking you if you can spare 30 minutes a month to join us at a Council meeting. Since we all work together, our James Short and G.W. Skene School Council is together.

What is a School council?
It is where we discuss things going on at the school and ways to raise money for the school. Parents that have questions or want to find ways to help at the school, or just get information are all welcome. I also attend COSC meeting (Council of School Council) meeting. At these meetings we have discussions with school trustees about bussing to budgets, amongst other things.

Our meetings are always held on a Thursday, usually the 3rd Thursday of the month.
My Question to you is “are you interested in being a part of this great group?” If you are, I’m interested in knowing what time would work best for you.  We have held meetings in the evening around 6, and held them after school around 3:45. We do offer babysitting, a teacher will have a movie going on in a classroom for the kids. Our council meeting is joint between our 2 schools, and so the meeting is one month at one school then the next at the other. Both Schools operate separate societies (fundraising groups). Those meetings our held at different times. G.W Skene has their Society meeting right after school council at G.W Skene learning Commons.

James Short Memorial is also a part of Calgary Reads. Ms. Fulmes is our schools coordinator. One of the programs that Calgary reads offers is Wee Read. It is an 8 week program in which you come in to the school twice a week and read a book with 2 children in kindergarten. Training is required Ms. Fulmes is able to do this at the school. I’m hoping to get this going for Feb. We would like to have training done the end of Feb.  You are required to have a police clearance and the training is one day it takes about 30 -40 min. if you are interested in taking part of this amazing program please send a note to school in your child’s communication folder.
