Special Programs

Hockey HEROS Program

Hockey HEROS is a program that works in collaboration with Aspen Family and Community Network Society to Empower children through ice hockey. The premise of H.E.R.O.S. is to use the game of hockey as a catalyst to attract youth to a program offering support for education self-esteem building and life skills training. The program focuses on boys and girls of diverse ethnicity from economically challenged neighbourhoods. The program will be conducted in an environment of fun and safety where each child is considered to be a HERO.

Students at G.W. Skene that have been selected, through a screening process conducted by staff at the school and representatives from the HEROS program, attend a weekly on-ice hockey skill development session. Students in the program also work with mentors in developing their Self-Esteem and provide Life Skills training during the on-ice sessions.
