Principal's Message | November
Writing the monthly message provides an opportunity to reflect upon the nature of our work together in the school. In doing so this month, I can’t help but notice the meaningful and multiple ways in which our staff and students take up the work together each day while embracing the Circle of Courage as a way of being in our world.
All four concepts of the Circle of Courage - Belonging, Generosity, Mastery and Independence, can be identified as major themes in our school and in our country’s observance of Remembrance Day. On November 10, beginning at approximately 10:30, we will be honouring the courage of our past and present soldiers and peacekeepers during a Remembrance Day assembly. In connection with this ceremony and the concept of ‘generosity’, Student Leadership will be promoting a poppy donation and our annual Veterans’ Food Drive. We invite you to join us for this most sincere and thoughtful assembly. Please bring any non-perishable food items to support our local veterans.
Conferences are a great opportunity for students to showcase mastery of learning. Learning conferences are an extremely important component of the learning process and are used as an opportunity for students, parents and teachers to celebrate areas of success and set goals for the next steps in learning. The conferences will take place on December 7th in the evening and December 8th during the day. Conference Manager will open up at 6 am on Sunday, November 26th for families to register for the upcoming conferences.
I would like to take this opportunity to provide families with a recent staff update. Mrs. Pollard has accepted a 0.6 temporary contract at our school and has begun to work with staff and students in a variety of ways. She will help teach physical education, provide literacy support and release Mrs. Day three afternoons a week so that Mrs. Day has an opportunity to provide extra resource support for our students.
Student Leadership, Performing Arts and Gardening Club are well underway again this year. Students are so eager to be actively involved in extra-curricular activities and I would like to thank the teachers that are giving up their lunch hours to host these special clubs. We are very fortunate to have such committed and dedicated staff.
Please watch for a notice coming home soon regarding t-shirt and hoodie sales for our families. Student Leadership will be promoting the sale of school t-shirts and hoodies to build a sense of Belonging at SAS and help support our sister school in Kenya. Any proceeds made from these t-shirt sales will directly impact the building of the classroom for the Masai village. We thank you in advance for your support!
In closing, I would like to recognize our entire student population for their daily demonstration of the Circle of Courage. Whether during a whole school assembly, playing on the playground or participating in rigorous classroom activities, your children fill us with great pride as they present themselves as active, engaged and caring citizens.
