Principal's Message | January/February

“In learning a foreign language, a child can transfer to the new language, the system of meanings he already possesses in his own. The reverse is also true – a foreign language facilitates mastering the higher forms of the native language. The child learns to see his language as one particular system among many.” – L.S. Vygotsky

Happy New Year

On behalf of our Escuela Canyon Meadows family to yours, we wish you a Happy New Year! The Christmas/Winter break is over and everyone has returned rested and re-energized. Our hope is that everyone was able to celebrate the season in ways that brought joy to your heart and peace to your life. The New Year allows us time to reflect on the 2017 school year and set goals for 2018. December was an extremely busy month with six learning celebrations, report cards and our Parent Led Conferences. If your family was unable to meet with your child’s homeroom teacher please contact the school to arrange for a Teacher Led Conference. Our goal is to have 100% participation as you are a partner in your child’s educational career.

The gift of giving was of importance at ECM! Thank you for giving to the Mayor’s Annual Food Drive to give back to the Calgarians who are struggling at this time of year. We are inspired by the generosity of our students, and these acts nurture students to become ethical citizens of society. I wish to also say thank you to our families for the generous donations for our annual craft and bake sale! We were able to raise $2280.30 for our students at Escuela Canyon Meadows! I would also like to thank parents who have paid their Activity Fee (all fieldtrips/residencies add up to a total of $85.00). We wish to continue to extend and enrich the learning experiences with fieldtrips and residencies and kindly encourage all families to pay at their earliest convenience. Please call the school to set up a meeting with the principal if you are struggling with payment.

We wish to welcome our new Escuela Canyon Meadows families to our Open House on Thursday, January 11 at 6:30 p.m. in our gymnasium. The presentation is for our parents/guardians only, as the children will come and visit our school on June 1st. During this presentation the following topics will be discussed: An introduction to Canyon Meadows International Spanish Academy, An overview of the Spanish Bilingual Program and Admission Procedures. We will conclude the evening with a tour of the school. The official date of registration will be Monday, January 22nd. Current kindergarten students are automatically registered in Grade One. There is no need for parents to come to the school or call the school to request a Grade One placement.

Accountability Pillar Survey for Parents of Grade 4 Students
Please note that from late January to the end of February, Alberta Education will be conducting the annual Accountability Pillar Survey of grade 4, 7 and 10 students and their parents. Parents will receive these surveys directly from Alberta Education. Our grade 4 students will respond to the Accountability Pillar Survey at the school.

All surveys are anonymous and ask questions about experiences with the school. In addition to English and French,

the parent survey is available in Chinese, Punjabi, Arabic, Blackfoot, Cree, Korean, Spanish, Tagalog and Urdu.

Your participation in the survey helps provide important information on the quality of education your child is receiving, so we encourage you to return your survey promptly. If you are unsure of an answer, please leave the question blank as clicking on “Don’t know” counts in the same category as the dissatisfied or very dissatisfied/poor or very poor/disagree or disagree strongly responses. Answering “don’t know” impact results negatively.

Survey results will be available to school authorities in May 2018, and will be reported publicly as part of the 3-Year Education Plans and Annual Education Results Reports.

Keeping our Students Safe
Three parking-related notes:

  • Please avoid parking in our Staff Parking Lot as children walk through these areas. We wish to keep our children safe at all times.
  • As always, please consider others when you park. The extra moments you spend by parking a bit farther away (or not blocking other vehicles) may mean the world to someone else.
  • Please be a role model for your children by using the crosswalk to cross our busy street in the morning.
