Welcome to Haultain Memorial School

Message from Administration | April

On our March 24th PD day, staff worked together to bring a new vision of our Learning Commons to life. The changes arose out of needs identified by teachers and students and we worked to create a space that supports teaching and learning that is active, rigorous, and engaging for students.

In our redesigned Learning Commons, students can choose from a variety of spaces to collaborate, work quietly, or explore learning as a whole class. Quiet areas where individuals or partners can read a book, nestle into a beanbag chair, or work independently are available. In the new maker space, art and building supplies are available to students who wish to build, explore, and create with Lego, K’nex, cardboard, and a variety of other loose parts. One of our parents is even building us a new Pegboard that will serve as an exploration centre for students. The maker space is a welcome addition for our students who have been using loose parts and creating in the classroom. For example, our grade 1/2 classes have been writing stories about worlds and characters they have created with loose parts and they recently built lobster traps out of recyclable materials to learn about 2 and 3D shapes in addition to developing an understanding of life in Acadia. Our Kindergarten students, who have been exploring the world through the eyes of an artist will be able to use the space like an artists’ studio to create masterpieces. The next time our grade 3/4 classes want to develop a prototype (like the planter boxes they recently designed), they will be able to do so in the maker space.
