Grade 1 - Mr. Bohn

"What can we discover to help us understand our world?"

The children have been having a wonderful time exploring this over-arching question. They have been very excited about their inquiries. The children have been very involved in inquiry about the past. They learned the answers to many of their questions about how the Inuit lived in the past. With these discoveries the children were able to make connections to modern Inuit communities. The children have been so inspired when they have been allowed to explore aspects of the curriculum that have peaked their interest. They have become comfortable finding knowledge and designing collaborative projects to present their discoveries.

To set the stage for Inuit inquiry the children went to the Glenbow museum. They studied Inuit artifacts and a museum docent talked to them about Inuit culture.

We also had an expert soap stone carver come in and teach the students the art of soap stone carving and the importance it played in the Inuit culture.
The children used books and the internet to research their questions about the Inuit.
The children shared their discoveries by working together to make collaborative projects.

The children were very interested in the Artic animals that played a huge part in the Inuit way of life. They followed this interest with further inquiry and project work.
