OLYMPIC
HEIGHTS SCHOOL Grade 1- Room 11- Mr. Bohn Our over arching question this year has been “How can we live peacefully?” The children have been focusing on the importance of the virtues of caring and cooperation and why they are so important if we are to work together. During this collaborative inquiry, the children had many opportunities to practice these virtues. The children were interested in the changes that happen in fall. Many questions were asked about fall. We worked together to find the answers. With a lot of planning, communication and collaboration the children designed a project to share their understanding. Why do leaves change colour in the fall? It gets cold and the “green stuff” (chlorophyll) dies. All that is left is the “orange and yellow stuff” (carotene.)
How do birds know how to fly south? The birds keep the sun on the left side and this is how they fly south. They only fly in the morning.
Where do the bugs go and why don’t they freeze? Bees eat honey and stay in a bunch to keep their bodies warm.
Where do the bugs go and why don’t they freeze? The monarch butterflies use the sun to help them fly south.
Where do the bugs go and why don’t they freeze? Ladybugs sleep (hibernate) under trees and bark all winter.
Why do the berries stay on the tree? The birds eat the berries. The red berries (of the Mountain Ash trees) and turn into wine and make the birds dizzy.
How do bears take care of their babies? The Mom bear wakes up and has babies. She gives them milk. They have no fur.
Why do leaves fall off the tree? The sap gets thick in the cold. It stops going to the leaves. Then they fall off.
How do animals change their fur colour in the fall? In fall the colour bags shoot less colour into the fur and it makes it white. It helps them blend into the snow.
