French - Grades 4-6 - Mrs. Kinjo
To enhance the learning of a second language, various cooperative games were introduced in the French classes. The grade 4 children were given the opportunities to interact and help each other to retain concepts and vocabulary in the Number Game. Practice and repetition facilitate their gradually progress towards saying their age, the dates, and simple mathematical applications in French.
Through the acquisition of vocabulary and grammar knowledge, written production is developed in a sequential fashion. Students move gradually from concrete visual activities to the formation of simple sentences to express ideas and experiences. After learning about pets and farm animals, the grade 5 children used simple descriptive sentences to introduce an animal of their choice.
Application of language skills in a different context is another method to develop the learning of a second language. Growth and extension were demonstrated in many ways. Some grade 6 students created French dialogues collaboratively with their peers and had fun presenting their production in an artistic approach through a puppet show.
Building on the skills they have learned previously, the grade 6 students used written language to answer questions about themselves and presented them in various formats. Illustrations and simple sentences were effectively used in booklets, posters, and PowerPoint to describe their physical and personal traits; preference of food and activities; and clothing for different seasons.
