Grade 1 - Mrs. McCulloch

In math, the children have been learning how to count to 100.  Each child chose a number between 1 and 100. The intended outcomes are that children are able to read, recognize and form whole numbers to 100.

The children  drew the number on a DVD case and used one colour of glass beads to cover one number, another colour to cover the other number and a third colour to fill in the background.  The next problem for the children was to solve how many beads were used in total.

The children cooperated with their grade three buddies. They planned how to create the numbers.  They counted all of the beads and then began creating a story about the number inside the DVD case and the significance of that number.

Can you guess what number this is? How many dark blue beads? How many light blue beads? How many clear beads? The children estimated how many beads they thought they used and then counted them.  They began answering the question~ “How many beads did I use in all?”

The books, The Best Part of Me by Wendy Ewald and You are Special by Max Lucardo provided a source of inspiration as we began discussing how we are all individual and special.  We then talked about how each of us has different hair colour, skin colour and eye colour.  We then discussed how we are a gift to our parents and how our own uniqueness shines through.

These ideas were interwoven with a discussion as to how we can be a gift to others and help others in the world~ What gifts do I have to offer the world?

The children will look at what we can do to help others and to help build a school in Rwanda or Malawi, Africa.

Each child carefully studied their individual photo that had been taken.  Then each one had to trace their photo by holding it up to a light surface.  The children added their own unique qualities to their own photo portrait.
