Seasonal Calendar 2012

The children have been learning about seasonal changes and colours as part of the grade one science curriculum.  They worked in pairs to create one page of a calendar for the year. The calendar pictures above represent February and October.

The children brought a variety of colours and textures of paper to school and sorted the colours into different categories.  Next they chose paper for their season and created a collage for a particular season.

We discussed what activities we do in different seasons or months of the year. For example, in October we see leaves changing colour and there are a lot of pumpkins during this time. In February, we celebrate friendship with others on Valentine’s Day.

The children asked questions such as:
“What do we need to wear in winter to stay warm?”
“Who goes skiing in winter?”
“Does anyone like to skate or toboggan in the winter?”
“What holidays do we celebrate in winter?”

We created twelve pictures to match the twelve months of the year. Each child created a sentence under each calendar page to represent what seasonal changes and activities we see in that month of the year.
