HISTORY

Historical Background

McKenzie Lake Community is named for an early settler in this area. The following information was obtained from the City of Calgary archives:

Among the first settlers in the southeast area of Calgary, Jas McKenzie came west from Montreal in 1882, several years before the arrival of the railroad. He filed a homestead in Section 32, in the centre of the McKenzie area, and was one of the first settlers on the east side of the Bow river.

When the arrival of the C.P.R. in 1884, and the Calgary-MacLeod Railroad in the 1890’s, many more people arrived from the east and settled in this area. It quickly became a prosperous farming area, situated on good farmland with easy road access to the rapidly growing city of Calgary to the northwest.

Construction of McKenzie Lake School began in July, 1995 and was completed in May 1996. The school opened for the first day of teaching and learning on August 12, 1996. The Official School Opening was held December 12, 1996.
