Principal's Message - May
Welcome to the month of May … busy, exciting, and full of opportunities for students to demonstrate
their learning and showcase their talents!
START SMART STAY SAFE police visits in Grade 3-4 are off to a very successful beginning. The S4 module
was initiated with students completing the brief writing activity “If I were a police officer I would …”.
Our teachers have reported that the experience of having a police officer in the class leading the students
in a specific lesson has been terrific.
Our calendar is pretty full for May. To begin with, “Alien In-line Skating” begins on May 9 and involves
all of our students from K to 6. Our Provincial Achievement Tests in Language Arts (Writing) take place
on May 15 (Grade 3) and May 16 (Grade 6). The rest of the tests take place from June 12 -19. Friday
May 18 is a non-instructional day … students and families can enjoy an extra day on the holiday weekend
while staff spend that Friday focused on professional learning. Monday May 21 is a holiday for everyone
and the school will be closed. The week following the holiday weekend is eventful: Grade 5-6 students
will visit the new science centre, “Telus Spark” on May 22; Grade 3-4 students will visit the Tyrrell
Museum in Drumheller on May 24; and parents will host the annual “Staff Appreciation Lunch” on May
25.
As we move into warmer weather, we would like to remind parents that the Riverbend policy for appropriate
clothing and footwear is in place. Flip flops are not appropriate for physical activity either in the
gym or out on the playground due to safety concerns. Tummy, chest and shoulders must be covered
(no straps showing please) and shorts at a reasonable length. Please review with your child the dress
policy found in the Student & Parent Handbook 2011-2012 and check with your child’s teacher or the
office for clarification about ‘reasonable’ or ‘appropriate’ clothing. Students not in compliance will need
to call home for replacement clothing to be brought to school by a parent prior to the student being admitted
to class. We appreciate your support of our school guidelines in this area.
Our “Celebration of Arts and Volunteers “will take place on May 30 and 31 in the gym. This is the time
when we honour our parents for the many contributions of time, energy and interest that they make to
our school community. Everyone is invited to walk through the gallery of student art, to attend the music
and drama presentations, and to enjoy the refreshments available in the staff room. The Art Gallery
(gym) will be open until 5:00 PM and a guest book will be available for comments from visitors.
And finally, I would like thank our School Council and the parents who comprise the ‘social committee’
branch of Council for the initiatives they have been involved in this spring: a bake sale during the March
Conferences, a family dance/ “Spring Fling”, on April 12, and the upcoming carnival on June 28 to kick
off the beginning of summer holidays. Well done parents!
Enjoy the month and the last few weeks of the school year,
Bonnie Spooner
