The Traditional Learning Centre Program uses teacher-directed instruction and character education to foster reflective thinking, continuous learning and responsible citizenship. It is a celebration of cultural diversity and commonly held values. The virtues-oriented school environment prepares students to meet the moral, technological and global challenges of the 21st century. Balmoral School serves approximately 575 TLC students from Grades 5 to 8. There is an opportunity for students to complete pre-advanced placement courses in Mathematics, Language Arts, Social Studies and Science. The school also offers a strong fine arts program, French as a second language, a diverse options program, and participation in inter-school athletics. Students have access to three technology labs, including two wireless mobile labs. Character education forms the foundation for expectations with an emphasis on virtues, positive values, and respect for self, others and the environment. The motto of TLC is “To think, to value, to know”. Balmoral School strives to maintain those high standards through continuous professional improvement. Our AISI project (Alberta Initiative for Student Improvement) is centered on “Curriculum and Diversity,” Higher order thinking, and support for Reading and Writing as the focus of inquiry. The TLC program uses teacher directed instruction and character education to foster reflective thinking through continuous learning and responsible citizenship. It is a celebration of diversity and commonly held values. Although the Traditional Learning Program is academically rigorous, it is not reserved for elite students. The program is designed to support all students who are motivated to work with teachers and parents to thoroughly develop their ability to achieve excellence in a structured, virtues oriented environment.

Program Description
Balmoral Junior High School values each of the fine arts as disciplines worthy of study in their own right, and the specialty areas provide students with opportunities to pursue interests in Visual art, dance, drama and music. In the Creative Learning program, we recognize that the arts are also complex symbol systems that people use in order to make sense of their world and their own place in the scheme of things. Creative uses of various technologies also enable learners to represent their learning in ways that are meaningful to them. By weaving opportunities for aesthetic impressions and expressions into the regular program in math, science and the humanities, we hope to provide students with varied “inroads” to successful mastery of required curriculum.

Student Eligibility
Students residing in the communities of Crescent Heights, Mount Pleasant, Tuxedo / Coventry Hills and Panorama Hills are pre-designated to attend Balmoral according to CBE boundary guidelines. Students who reside in communities outside of our catchment boundaries are welcome to apply for enrollment at Balmoral School.
