Principal’s report;

March 2nd of 2010 will mark 125 years that the Calgary Board of Education has provided quality public education for the residents of Calgary. You can read more on the CBE homepage at
http://www.cbe.ab.ca/125thCelebration/index2.htm . Quite an accomplishment when you think that students at John Ware have never heard of a rotary phone, life without the Internet or TV, and a slide rule. I really am aging myself and any of you who know what I’m referring to. At the recent CBE System Opening Presentation at the Radisson Hotel, our new Chief Superintendent, Naomi Johnson spoke about the CBE’s “Proud Past” and “Bright Future. ” Her address was inspiring, thought provoking, and very much designed to have us all think about what’s ahead in teaching and learning for 2009-10 and beyond.

September is flying by with our early return at the end of August and all of our Grade 9s having the opportunity to visit the World Skills Competition at the Stampede Grounds. It was a remarkable event showcasing incredible masters from around the world in cabinet making, bricklaying, landscaping, electronics, welding, and the list goes on.. In September we also had our grade 8s take part in an off campus Bow River Water Study, and our grade 7s having a full week in the Open Minds program either at the Zoo, Cross Conservation Area, or the Glenbow Museum.

We started the 2009-10 school year with very few additions or staff leaving, this greatly benefits the continuity we can build into our practice and having staff who are more familiar with students and their learning profiles. Doris Male and Ron Staines has retired as of June 30th and Dave Ball has just left us to an Assistant Principal role at another CBE school. We’ve also said goodbye to Nikki Hansen who is now teaching in Korea. We’re happy to welcome Sheryl Burrows who will join the grade 7 and 8 team as our new humanities teacher.
