Calgary Board of Education

Each year the CBE Transportation Department evaluates school bus routes.  One consideration involves reviewing where there is potential to move students to Calgary Transit for service within our guidelines. The factors considered for a move to Calgary Transit are grade configurations, ride times, communities with existing Calgary Transit service, number of bus/train transfers, number of students, and Calgary Transit capacity. There are many benefits for students to using Calgary Transit:

  • Frequent stop locations
  • Bus shelters at many stops and all train stations.
  • Use of the pass beyond the school day for extracurricular activities
  • Frequency of busses-if a student misses the bus, another one will follow
  • A smartphone app to see bus schedules/times

Currently, the CBE has many GR 6-9 students using Calgary Transit to access regular programs as well as programs of choice.  These students live in a variety of communities across the city and attend a number of different middle or junior high schools.
Beginning in the 2017-2018 school year, students living in our designated communities and attending John Ware School will move from yellow school bus service to Calgary Transit to get to and from school.

A student bus pass for Calgary Transit will cost $700 beginning in September 2017. Families have the option to purchase full year or monthly passes.  Families may also qualify for the City of Calgary’s Fair Entry program which sees riders pay a reduced rate for Calgary Transit depending on household income. Bill 1, An Act to Reduce School Fees was introduced in March 2017. Under this provincial legislation, Grade 6-12 students residing more than 2.4 km from their designated school attending a Regular Program and assigned to Calgary Transit will be responsible for purchasing bus passes.  The CBE will rebate families $549, meaning they will pay $151/year.  More details about the rebate program will be announced before the end of the school year.
We recognize this change has a significant impact on families and want to provide as much advance notice as possible to communicate these changes.  We are committed to working with families to provide as smooth a transition as possible. Please contact the school at 403-777-7930 should you have any further questions.
