Weekly Update | Nov. 6 - Nov. 10, 2017

Dear Rideau Families

It is hard to believe that it is already November. The cold weather is settling in and we are going to have to demonstrate RAM Grit and dress for the weather. Boots and Snow pants are cool – even in grade 9!!! The guideline for weather with Calgary Board of Education is -20 degrees and we must factor in wind chill. Of course we also need to remember that the weather changes throughout the day so students must come prepared.

Junior High staff have worked to set up a lunch program which offers students a variety of experiences during the week. Students can make choices of where they would like to be but are not free to roam about during the lunch hour. Technology will be available in the learning commons two days while the other two days will be for exploring and building with maker space materials. We have dedicated a room as well for students who would like to do homework or read quietly. Other activities include Chess, Games, Art, WE Club, GSA club, Yoga, Knitting. These may change from time to time and new clubs may be added.

Elementary and Junior High students will be participating in PE at Repsol, Christ Church and Parkhill Soccer Association until winter break. Each venue offers a variety of experiences to our students. All of this takes additional planning and preparation by all of our staff. I am so appreciative of their endless commitment. When it is appropriate our teachers will book buses for these activities. There are times when students might walk. Student safety will always be at the forefront of our minds.

Our WE Scare Hunger Drive was very successful – thank you for thinking of others in our greater community who rely on us for support.

Thank you to all families in elementary who supported the classroom Halloween Celebrations. It was a great time for everyone.

Please encourage friends and neighbors to join us for our Open House on Thursday evening. We are proud of Rideau and want to encourage students to attend.

We are very fortunate to be sharing our Remembrance Day ceremony with Elbow Park Elementary School. Their generosity to invite us to join with them and have a real gym for our celebration is very kind. Our students will be attending on Friday November 10 at 9:30. Kindergarten, Grade 1 and 2 students will take a bus and all other students will walk. (weather permitting). We would love to have families join us; however, as we can all appreciate with two schools together, the space is very limited. We look forward to celebrations in our own gym and having families join us in the near future.

Do take time to drive by the Field of Crosses on Memorial Drive and help our children to understand the impact of war and the importance of acceptance and kindness. Consider taking in the Justice Film Festival http://www.justicefilmfestival.ca/.

Have a great week.

Judi Hadden
Principal

Rideau Park Update | Oct. 31, 2017

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The following is provided as an update to the flood mitigation and fire repairs work being undertaken at Rideau Park School.

By early November, we expect landscaping in front of the school along with skateboard and scooter racks to be in place. The playground and SportCourt should also be completed and ready for use. There is a small area of retaining wall at the south end of the school that will need to be completed in the spring; this area will remain fenced off until the work is completed.

The permanent parking lot is anticipated to be completed by the end of November. Underground storm sewer connections related to the gymnasium rebuild following the fire have resulted in a delay, however we are working closely with our partners to ensure the lot is ready for use by the end of November.

The band room is progressing and should be ready by mid-November. The nearby Scouts’ Hall will continue to be used for this purpose until such time as the band room is deemed ready for students and staff. Work on the gymnasium is also advancing but not as rapidly as originally anticipated due to the need to replace the existing wood structure with a steel structure. Expected to be completed by late December, students will soon benefit from the completed SportCourt as well as the Repsol Sport Centre for their physical education.

We are working closely with the architect, project manager and general contractor to accelerate the work where possible. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact the school Principal Judi Hadden at jehadden@cbe.ab.ca or 403-777-7480.

Sincerely,
Dany Breton, Superintendent
Facilities and Environmental Services
