Science 8 vocabulary words

General Vocabulary (not unit specific):

Hypothesis

A statement of a proposed relationship, based on background information or an observed pattern of events, and stated in a way that makes it testable

Analyze

examine methodically and in detail the constitution or structure of (something, esp. information), typically for purposes of explanation and interpretation

Conclusion

An interpretation of the results of an experiment as it applies to the hypothesis being tested

Variable

Evidence

the available body of facts or information indicating whether a belief or proposition is true or valid

Theory

Observation

The use of senses to gather information; in science, often aided by instruments such as telescopes, thermometers and balances

Apparatus

Scientific Method

a method of procedure that has characterized natural science since the 17th century, consisting in systematic observation, measurement, and experiment, and the formulation, testing, and modification of hypotheses

Interpret

explain the meaning of (information, words, or actions)

Experiment

a scientific procedure undertaken to make a discovery, test a hypothesis, or demonstrate a known fact

Qualitative

relating to, measuring, or measured by the quality of something rather than its quantity

Quantitative

relating to, measuring, or measured by the quantity of something rather than its quality (numbers)

Procedure

a series of actions conducted in a certain order or manner

Interpolate

insert (something) between fixed points

Extrapolate

extend the application of (a method or conclusion, esp. one based on statistics) to an unknown situation by assuming that existing trends will continue or similar methods will be applicable

Prototype

a first or preliminary model of something, esp. a machine, from which other forms are developed or copied

Interact

act in such a way as to have an effect on another; act on each other in return

Data

facts and statistics collected together for reference or analysis

Error

a measure of the estimated difference between the observed or calculated value of a quantity and its true value

Relationship

the way in which two or more concepts, objects, or people are connected, or the state of being connected

Investigate

carry out a systematic or formal inquiry to discover and examine the facts of (an incident, allegation, etc.) so as to establish the truth

Control

In a scientific experiment, a standard to which the results are compared; often necessary in order to draw a valid conclusion; ensures a fair test

Chart

a sheet of information in the form of a table, graph, or diagram

Graph

a diagram showing the relation between variable quantities, typically of two variables, each measured along one of a pair of axes at right angles with the responding variable on the vertical axes
