Principal's Message | October

It’s hard to believe that the first month of the school year is now complete! Thank you to our Louis Families that joined us on September 20nd for our Welcome Back Open House. It was a huge success with many of our families taking advantage of the food trucks that were parked on the back compound. This event showcased the amazing projects that our students completed focusing on the concept of ”Curiosity”.

Bisons Athletics have kicked off a busy season of competition. We have many teams competing in the Calgary Middle School Level Athletic Association, including girls’ soccer, girls’ and boys’ volleyball and cross-country running. As well, our elementary running club has started practices. Thanks to all students who have joined the teams and all coaches for dedicating your “extra” time to our student athletes. As the colder weather moves in, we also have a full compliment of lunch hour clubs being offered. Students are reminded to listen to morning announcements and watch for posters as many of the clubs are starting this month.

School Fees

As outlined in my September newsletter, school fees across Alberta have come under review by the Provincial Government. With our fees now approved, parents are requested to log onto My CBE Account to view the fees that are owing.

Lunchroom Fees

For students in grades 1-6 must be paid as soon as possible, as these fees pay for our lunchroom supervisors. If your child is in grades 1-6 and they stay at school for lunch, you must register online for lunch supervision and pay the required fee of $255. Any shortfalls in these payments will come out of our instructional budget, directly impacting the resources and services that we are able to offer to students. Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter!

Field Trips (Off-Site Activity)

Many students have already brought home and payment requests for field trips. These off-campus experiences are incredibly valuable and compliment tasks that are classroombased. Due to Provincial Government initiatives, field trips will now be paid on a per-trip basis, rather than by one fee at the start of the year. Field trip fees can be paid online via MYCBE Account, by cash, cheque or by credit/debit card in the school office.

Entrance Imporvement Fund

School Council is sponsoring a fundraising initiative aimed to raise money to improve the front entrance of our school. The project includes new picnic-style table and chairs for our front entrance area, a mural, new school signage and a digital message display. Information about this project is now on our website with additional information being sent home with students this week.

Lastly, please remember that we have students who have severe nut allergies at Louis Riel and therefore we are a “Nut Aware School”. Please ensure that your child’s lunch is NUT FREE so that we can keep all students safe. Thank you! Please be sure to refer to our school website. It will be regularly updated with monthly calendars and notices. As always, should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.

All the best,

Heather Goodman,
