Principal's Message

Catherine O'Brien-Cusano

The first weeks of school are always an exciting time for students and staff. It is a wonderful time to catch up on summer events, make new friends and welcome back returning students and staff. Everyone at Dr. Oakley is off to a great start! We were pleased to welcome staff, students and parents and have the opportunity to share many stories and adventures from summer holidays.

Our Assistant Principal, Ms. Stephanie Jones continues to be away on a maternity leave. Until we are appointed a replacement from the CBE, we are very pleased to have Ms. Terra Xavier, one of our Literacy Learning Leader assisting in this role for the next few weeks. Ms. Xavier is an outstanding Learning Leader, very supportive of students, staff, parents and a valued member of our Administration Team. During this transition period, we are happy to have Mr. Edward Fredenburg covering her Literacy Support position. Welcome to Dr. Oakley!

We are also excited to welcome Ms. Lisa Bryden and Ms. Monica McKinlay to our school this year. Ms. Bryden has joined our Green Team and Ms. McKinlay will be working alongside Ms. Erin Warburton and Ms. Terra Xavier as part of our Literacy Support Team working with students in smaller guided reading groups. Ms. Tammy Gregan and Ms. Courteney Heriot have returned to our staff continuing in Tan Team covering Ms. Leah LeBouthillier and Ms. Samantha Quinn’s maternity leaves. Ms. Monica Swityk continues to teach in Teal Team while Ms. Gayle Reid is on medical leave. A list of our entire Dr. Oakley staff is also included in the newsletter.

This year we have 155 students which are organized into eight teaching and learning communities. Each student will have a ‘responsibility’ teacher who will develop the student’s Individualized Program Plan (IPP). It is an expectation, however, that all teachers within the team learning community have instructional responsibility for all students. With regard to supervision, safety on the playground, around the hallway and bussing, all staff members have a commitment to every student’s safety and well-being at Dr. Oakley.

We have had a great beginning to the new school year and look forward to working together.
