New students

Your first day!

Welcome to Harold Panabaker School. We are so pleased you have chosen our school for you child’s junior high learning experience. We have a safe, secure and friendly environment where students are encouraged to take risks with their learning and achieve to their potential. We pride ourselves on knowing our students and on being one of the best junior high schools in Calgary.

It has been our experience that most students are both excited about junior high as well as a little nervous. The purpose of this letter is to inform you about the opening of school in September and our plans to make the transition for grade 7 students go as smoothly as possible.

School will start on Tuesday, September 3, 2013, for Grade 7 students only! We want to have only the grade 7 students the first day to make it more comfortable for them and so we can focus all our attention on making our new students feel welcome. Students should go to the gym at 9:15 am for the Welcome to Junior High School Assembly where we will introduce the staff to them and students will learn about the school and our expectations. Parents are welcomed to attend the assembly at 9:15 to get a feel for the new school and to perhaps allay some of your child’s fears. We ask that student who take the bus however, are not driven by parents. It is important for students to experience the new transportation routine which includes taking the bus and locating the stop; as well drivers will not wait unnecessarily for students that are being driven by parents. We will end the assembly by having each grade 7 homeroom teacher take their students to their homeroom class. For the remainder of the morning, students will participate in a number of activities designed to acclimatize them to the junior high environment. We call this Junior High 101. This will include tours of the school with their homeroom teacher and a grade 8 or 9 tour guide, a review of the school handbook, a snack break of pizza compliments of the school, explanation and practice on how to open a locker and a run through the timetable. The busses will be picking the students up at 1:00 pm. With this planning it is our hope that this first day starts the year off on a very positive note for all our grade 7 students.

Other information:

  • For our bussing students, bus route information will be available at the school August 29, 2012 or online. Feel free to drop by or call the school between 9:00 – 3:00 to confirm the availability of the applicable bus route map and when they are available for distribution.
  • We will be sending home a flurry of the usual paperwork that comes at the beginning of every school year. So be sure to look out for it and sign and return the appropriate forms.
  • For the first day of school we would recommend that students bring a three ring binder with some paper and a pen and pencil. A supply list is attached and will also be posted on our web site (http://schools.cbe.ab.ca/b643/).
  • We will be having a Meet the Teacher Night on Thursday September 19, 2013. Please bring your child and join us in the school gym at 7:00 pm. This is the time you will get to meet your child’s teacher and see the school.
