Welcome to R.T. Alderman School

Sustainability of the Regular Program at Maple Ridge & R.T. Alderman School

In February 2017, The Calgary Board of Education (CBE) communicated decisions to add the Science Program to the current student populations at Maple Ridge School and R.T Alderman School. These decisions came after a comprehensive engagement process with the two schools as well as other schools in the area.

During the engagement process, Maple Ridge School and R.T. Alderman School parents indicated that it was important to them to maintain a regular program in the community. That is why the program was kept at the schools while adding the Science Program. At the time the decision was made, it was acknowledged that interest in the Science Program might reduce enrolment in the regular program and result in a smaller student population.

We have seen a decline in enrolment in the regular program at both schools already. Registration for the Science Program for the 2018-19 school year is currently underway, with a lottery to be held on Feb. 14. After the lottery, we will know if more students will be moving from the regular program to the Science Program next year. If there is a significant shift from the regular program to the Science Program, we may need to consider alternate locations for regular program students currently attending Maple Ridge School and R.T. Alderman School.

We understand this possibility will affect many of you. Before any decisions are made, we will engage with staff, students, parents and others to gather thoughts and perspectives that will be considered in the decision-making process. If decisions need to be made that will affect students in the 2018-19 school year, engagement opportunities will be planned for March or Apr.of this year.

We will update you again by Feb. 28, 2018. If you have questions, please contact the Area 5 office at or 403-777-8412.

Parent-Teacher Conferences | Mar. 21 & 22

Semester 1 Report Cards went home Thursday, January 25th, 2018. Please make sure to sign the envelope and return to school.

“… [A]ssessment is an integral part of the teaching and learning process. Personalized learning occurs through flexible, responsive relationships between the teacher, the student and the content within the instructional core. Assessment includes a continuous cycle of instruction, gathering evidence from a variety of sources, interpreting that evidence and making adjustments. Students work alongside teachers in an active pursuit of learning, developing self-understanding and participating in decision-making.”

Parents and students will have an opportunity to meet with their core teachers on Wednesday, March 21 (2:00-8:00 PM) and Thursday, March 22 (2:00-8:00 PM) for Parent Teacher Conferences
