New school zone times take effect

Calgary school zones and playground zones now have standardized hours, improving safety and clarity for both drivers and pedestrians.

On July 22, 2014 Calgary City Council approved changes to school and playground zone timing.

  • School zones will now be in effect from 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. on school days.
  • Playground zones will also be in effect from 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day, year-round.
During these hours the speed limit is reduced to 30 km/h. The change will affect more than 180 school zones and 1,500 playground zones. Calgary Police will begin enforcing the new times on Sept. 1, 2014. The Calgary Board of Education and other area school boards will now work with the City of Calgary to identify opportunities to transition some elementary schools from school zones to playground zones.
