Our vision at Arbour Lake School is to create an exemplary middle school for the 21st Century Learner. We have studied the work of the National Middle Schools Association and emphasize a project-based learning environment that is integrated, exploratory, challenging and relevant. Although it may seem that we are a large middle school of over 800 students, we strive to personalize learning for our learners by bringing together an instructional staff who are well-versed in teaching young adolescents. Each wing or hallway includes varied grades so that older and younger students can work together during hallway or school projects and special events to create a sense of community. We recognize that while our 21st century learners rely on information, media and technology skills, they also require skills in critical thinking/problem solving, communication, collaboration, and creativity/innovation. We provide access to current technology in the classroom and the integrated learning centre: we have incorporated information, media and technology skills in all subject areas. We encourage students to participate in their learning – build awareness of the curricular outcomes and communicate what they know in a variety of ways. We require students to participate in self assessment and reflect on their work through processes such as the e-portfolio.
