On August 27, 2009, you made history as the first students in Samuel W. Shaw School ever! The staff and I are excited to be with you on the journey of making our school an outstanding and innovative learning experience for you. We are certainly looking forward to a fantastic school year for all the students, staff and parents. Only through a combined effort; can we create the best possible middle school experience.

Our goal is at Samuel W. Shaw School is to provides students an outstanding learning experience for them to achieve their full potential. Through mutual respect of all people in the building, we hope all students can feel free to take risks in their learning and get involved in school activities. Each student should plan to become an active participant in our learning community. Students need to come to school ready to learn, get involved, try their personal best and achieve their academic goals. Our school is here to facilitate positive development of our students

We want every student to feel they have an important role in laying the foundation of a positive school culture for years to come. Every student should be active with the ABC’s: Achieve…Believe…Create!

“Who was Samuel W. Shaw?”

The school is named after a remarkable Calgarian for whom the area of Shawnessy, Shawnee Slopes and Shaw Meadows in Fish Creek Park was named. His mill was located in Fish Creek Park. He was a innovator in Calgary having created the first phone line from his store in Midnapore to one in downtown Calgary. His pioneering spirit and innovation will be a good example of the work of the new middle school.

Achieve, Believe and Create: The ABC’s of Samuel W. Shaw!

All students are supported to achieve their potential. They are encouraged to believe in themselves and their learning community. Students are challenged to actively engage in their learning and are encouraged to demonstrate their learning creatively and with innovation.

The new middle school will be an exemplar of inclusive public education and learning in the 21st Century. Active engagement of students in inquiry based learning and meeting the needs of all students. The foundation of the school is that learning has to be relevant, challenging, integrative and exploratory. The school promote meaningful relationships and learning with in the entire middle school community. The goal is to create an outstanding middle school that meets the needs of adolescents for today and in the future.

Learner Expectations

The students of Samuel W. Shaw School are expected to be prepared to take part in the learning process. This means arriving in class on time, with the necessary materials (books, binders, pens, pencils, completed homework, etc.) Students are expected to actively engage in learning to the best of their ability and positively contribute to the learning of others in the school.
