Homeroom Structure at QEHS

One of the strengths of Queen Elizabeth High School is the Homeroom structure.  We are a Grade 7 to 12 school. All grades consist of community students, Gifted and Talented Education (GATE), Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH), and Knowledge and Employability (K&E) students. Part of the day, students work with similarly streamed students, and part of the day, students are integrated with each other.  Hallways may be a mix of both GATE and community classes, or Junior and Senior High students.  We have strong Leadership classes at both the Junior and Senior High levels, and these students are also distributed throughout the many Homerooms. Staff work quite intentionally to foster a whole-school inclusive atmosphere which is safe, caring, and productive for everyone.

QEHS is finding good success with a Homeroom structure where every teacher meets with a mixed group of Grade 7 to 12 students for a short period of time once a week.  DHH students, and some K&E students may be grouped into more homogeneous Homerooms for their benefit.  In most cases, students stay with the same Homeroom teacher throughout their years at QEHS.  This long-term arrangement allows the Homeroom teacher to get to know the students, and be responsible for any IPPs that guide the students’ learning.  The teacher becomes the student’s advocate and champion for the six years that students stay at QEHS. Junior High students get to know Senior High students, and SH students get to know JH students.  There is no “Mentorship” program among students, and students are neither encouraged nor discouraged from contact outside of the brief weekly Homeroom meetings.  Students simply get to know one another, can add a name to a face, and through that knowing, are taught to respect and value each other.  Activities during Homeroom vary and might consist of those which promote school team-building, fun activities, a JH or SH spirit-building assembly, goal setting, or simple report card and document distribution.
