Interact Blog Our Sponsors:

  • Rotary International: Western Interact is one of many Rotary clubs. It’s a worldwide organization dedicated to humanitarian service and goodwill, with over 1.22 million members worldwide! Rotary’s motto is, “Service above Self,” and they live it with passion.
  • YVC – Youth Volunteer Corps (of Youth Central): The YVC group in Calgary is only one of many in North America, engaging youth across Calgary in simple, fun volunteering projects. Calgary’s YVC operates out of Youth Central’s office, just 15 minutes from Western!

Major Projects:

  • CUPS (Calgary Urban Project Society): a Calgary organization dedicated to helping impoverished families, with a focus on health care and education. Interact supported them with a food drive this year.
  • MS (Multiple Sclerosis) Society of Canada: this group has been promoting research and education of multiple sclerosis, a degenerative  mental disease, since 1948, with 28,000 members!
  • Doctors Without Borders: this international organization provides medical aid to any country in need, usually developing and war-torn nations. Since its beginning in France in 1971 (which explains their common name MSF – ‘Médecins Sans Frontières’), they’ve spread to over 60 countries.

Minor Projects:

  • School Supplies for Kids: a project of Na’amat Canada. This allows thousands of Calgary children living in domestic violence shelters with backpacks full of supplies for a school year. Interact has had great success with this event in the past.
  • Toy Mountain: an initiative of Petro-Canada and LITE 95.9 with the Salvation Army to build a mountain of toys during the Holiday season for less fortunate children in Calgary.
  • Heritage Park: one of Calgary’s top cultural attractions, and also a great place for volunteering! Interact helps with various events throughout the year, most notably “Once Upon a Christmas” in December.
  • Inn from the Cold: an initiative to offer shelter to the homeless in community buildings and businesses. A warm dinner is offered, as well as bedding and a chance to sleep safely and comfortably.
  • Operation Christmas Child: a project of Samaritan’s Purse, a Christian organization in over 100 countries. Operation Christmas child is a global gift exchange, where participants pack show boxes full of toys and living essentials, and the boxes are flown to less fortunate countries. Over 75 million boxes have been distributed to date!
  • Empty Bowls: a project through Youth Central, making and baking bowls from clay. The bowls are then auctioned off, with proceeds going to a different organization every year. If you’re feeling creative, participate this March!
  • Jam the Van: a project with Purolator and the Calgary Interfaith Food Bank, to stuff a mail van so full it never goes hungry again! Uh, sorry, it’s the food bank customers that never go hungry again…
