·         WCHS Library…Celebrating Black History Month

Stop by the library to view this week’s profiles of notable Canadian Black Influencers:

·         Poet and writer Ian Williams was raised in Brampton, and completed his Ph.D. degree in English at the University of Toronto, where he also works as an English professor. In 2011, he was named by CBC as one of ten Canadian writers to watch. In 2014-2015 he was a Canadian Writer-in-Residence for the Distinguished Writers Program at the University of Calgary. In addition to garnering critical acclaim for his poetry and short stories, Ian Williams was a judge for the 2018 Griffin Poetry Prize and became a trustee of the Griffin Trust For Excellence In Poetry in September of that year. His first novel, Reproduction was published this year.

·         d’bi Young Anitafrika is a Canadian dub poet, educator, playwright, and actor. She is a queer, black, feminist best known for her plays, and as the founder of the Watah Theatre Institute. Among her works include nine plays, three collections poetry, a comic book and seven Dub Poetry albums. She was named one of seven YWCA Toronto Women of Distinction and is a recipient of the Vital People Award from the Toronto Foundation for her commitment to social justice through the arts. D’bi Young is internationally known and celebrated for her exploration of intersectional black feminism, gender, identity, sexuality, race, and the human experience

·         ARE YOU GRADUATING THIS YEAR? If you so, GRADE 12s who have a PERIOD 1 SPARE, Please pick up a CREDIT CHECK sheet from Student Services (Guidance office) as soon as possible.

 

·         The Hotchkiss Brain Institute and the University of Calgary are hosting the 12th annual Calgary Brain Bee, Saturday April 13th 2019 starting at 10:00 am.  It is an international competition where students are asked questions pertaining to the Brain and nervous system.
