Student Testimonial “I knew that the digestive system took stuff in and then something happened before it came out, but I didn’t know it was so disgusting...and awesome.”
- Mankarman, Introductory Medical Studies
Medical Studies is a program that looks to take students interested in the medical sciences both a direction for their future careers and a solid grounding in many of the skills that they will need as 21st century medical professionals.
Inquiry Into Anatomy and Physiology
The class takes students’ studies beyond what they learn in Biology class and enhances their knowledge around human anatomy and physiology while challenging students to collaborate and work as groups in order to research common pathologies (illnesses) surrounding those anatomical structures. The basis that students gain in this course will assist them in future studies in medicine.
Frequently, students enter this course with an idea that they want to be a medical professional, but no idea what kind they want to be. This course offers a platform for students to explore all facets of the healthcare industry. This is done through in class research projects as well as class visits from health professionals that have, in the past, included Nurses, Massage Therapists, Paramedics and Emergency (911) Operators.
Medical Sciences is, at its base, an evidence-based discipline. for this reason, a heavy focus is placed on good research skills including secondary research such as print and online sources. Also included in this focus is frequent labs that challenge the students to both test and design tests for common human physiological markers.
