Commercial Food Courses

Everyone has to eat. About one out of every 3 meals is eaten out of the home. Students will explore the world of cooking and baking, from the theory of why things taste the way they do to practical cooking for the home, the staff room and the school cafeteria. The student will learn basic cooking skills as well as gain experience in using hand tools and equipment used at home and commercial kitchens.

Commercial Foods is an option that is offered to grade 10, 11 and 12 students. Students in grade 10 have the opportunity to explore cooking and baking basics. The basic skills acquired in in grade 10 can then be built upon in grades 11 and 12.This course has a significant hands-on component, and is taught as a life skill. Students may choose to carry on with this trade to pursue a career as a chef through post-secondary schooling or via the apprenticeship route which is also offered at James Fowler High School.
