Guitar and Piano Program

Guitar and piano programming at James Fowler offer opportunities for students with limited musical experience to begin their music education. Classes can also be tailored to suit the individual needs of students with previous experience who would like to expand their musical skillset to include the guitar or piano.

Courses offered

Guitar 10-20: This series of 5-credit courses aligns with curriculum outcomes listed in Alberta Education’s Program of Study ‘Chamber Music 10-20’. The course runs inside the timetable and no previous musical experience is required. Students will develop and broaden theoretical understandings in relation to the guitar and learn to read both traditional and tablature notation. Students will also focus on developing technical skills on classical guitars, and will complete a variety of activities, performance projects, playing tests and written assignments. The class also functions as a performing ensemble outside of the timetable. There are no co-requisites for this course.

Piano 10-20: This series of 5-credit courses aligns with curriculum outcomes listed in Alberta Education’s Program of Study ‘General Music 10-20’. The course runs inside the timetable and no previous musical experience is required. Students will develop and broaden theoretical understandings in relation to the piano and will learn to read standard musical notation. Students will also focus on developing technical keyboard skills, and will complete a variety of activities, performance projects, playing tests and written assignments. This class has no out-of-timetable performance component, and no co-requisites.
