English Language Learners

Prerequisite: The English Language Learners (ELL) Program at Ernest Manning is designed for students whose first language is not English.

Level placement in ELL is based on assessment and teacher recommendation.

Sequence of Courses

ELL Level 2 (5 credits)
ELL 2B is a beginner class for students with some or no experience in English.  The classes will help students develop basic communication skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking.  Students will spend as much time in level 2 as required to achieve the course objectives.

ELL Level 3 (5 credits/each level) 
ELL 3A and ELL 3B  (Reading 15) are classes for intermediate students.  Classes are intended to help students develop their communication skills in content areas. 

ELL Level 4A (5 credits)
ELL 4A  (Reading 25) is an intermediate/advanced level class designed to develop academic language skills.  Emphasis is placed on research, reading and writing.

TRANSITION ENGLISH (5 credits)
Transitions English ELL 4B is an advanced level course for students who intend to pursue academic, credit English courses in high school.  The course is designed to strengthen skills in interpreting literature, using the strands mandated by the Alberta curriculum for Language Arts.  The class is one semester in length. 

Recommendation on completion:  >80% - English 10-1
                                                   50% - 79% - English 10-2,
                                                   English 20-2 with teacher recommendation

INTRODUCTION TO SCIENCE 15-ELL (5 credits)
This class is for Level 2/3A students.  This course is an introduction to the vocabulary and core concepts in Science.

Recommendation on completion:  Transition Science 14-ELL

TRANSITION SCIENCE 14-ELL (5 credits for Science 14)
The focus of this course is building language through science and parallels the non-ELL Science 14 curriculum.  Students become familiar with lab safety, writing lab reports, and conducting  experiments.

Recommendation on completion:  > 80% - Science 10
                                                   50 - 79% - Science 24

INTRODUCTION TO CANADIAN STUDIES 15-ELL (5 credits)
This class is for Level 2/3A students.  This course is an introduction to the vocabulary and core concepts in Canadian Studies.  Topics include history, geography, government, social issues and identity.

CANADIAN STUDIES 25-ELL  (5 credits)
This class is for Level 3B students.  This course explores additional vocabulary and core concepts in Canadian Studies.  Topics include history, geography, government, social issues and identity.

TRANSITION SOCIAL STUDIES 10-2 - ELL  (5 credits for Social 10-2)
This class is a sheltered Social 10-2 class for Level 3B and/or Level 4 students.   Students will complete a variety of written work assignments, and presentations, as are required for Social 10-2. 

TRANSITION MATH 10 PREP (5 credits for Math 10 Prep)
The focus of this course is building language through mathematics.  The course parallels the non ELL Math 10 prep course.  Placement based on language assessment and teacher recommendation through  Mathematic abilities.  See Mathematics section.

                                                   or - Applied Math 10
                                                   or - Math 24
