Work Experience

Work Experience is an opportunity for students to earn high school credit for documenting their learning at a part time paid or volunteer position. At the start of Work Experience students set their learning goals in a learning plan then document their work hours by submitting weekly time sheets. Students demonstrate their developing employability skills and technical skills by adding examples of what they learned to their Career Portfolio then use those examples in an assessment interview with their teacher. Employers complete an evaluation of the students learning and performance which makes up a significant portion of the student's mark in Work Experience. An assessment and interview is completed every 125 hours (5 credits) and if the student wishes to continue they develop a new learning plan with their employer that sets new learning goals that will demonstrate continued learning of new knowledge, technical skills, and employability skills

Credits:

  • Work Experience students earn one credit for every 25 hours of documented work and learning. Students must log a minimum of 75 hours (3 credits) in order to earn Work Experience credits.
  • Students can earn up to 10 credits at each grade level (Work Experience 15, 25, and 35)
  • Up to 15 Work Experience credits can be used to meet the 100 credit graduation requirement

Work Experience opportunities are available in just about any job that would hire a young person. Prior to logging hours for Work Experience credit, each work site is visited by the Off Campus teacher and will be approved only if the teacher is satisfied that the student is working in a safe environment and that the employer is committed to providing training for the student and to helping the student learn grow and mature as an employee.
