Creativity, Action, Service (CAS)

The IB Diploma Programme emphasises the importance of a well-rounded education. Students receive considerable benefits from completion of subject-specific instruction, but also need to realize that they have a responsibility to the community and to those less fortunate than themselves. Therefore, the IB organization, in its pursuit of the education of the whole person, wants students to be involved in activities outside of the classroom. As a result, Diploma candidates at Henry Wise Wood will work with the C.A.S. supervisor to create a personal portfolio of involvement that totals at least 150 hours of involvement over two years. At least 50 Hours should be allocated to expose the creative mind to help the community; another 50 hours should be used to physically/actively help out society; at least 50 more hours should be used in any other other way to benefit the local or greater community. At the end of the C.A.S. program, students will be required to complete a reflective essay based on their experiences, challenges and learning as a volunteer and active member of society. Please remember that all of these hours should be allocated throughout the 11 and 12 years (therefore, not completed all during the grade 11 or all during the grade 12 year of the candidate).
